I’m sorry Mom

It is said that you can never understand what it is to be a Mother until you have become one.

I am one who believes that this is true and now that I have children of my own, there are a few things I need to apologize to my mother for:

  1. I’m sorry Mom; for giving you the silent treatment. I have now been on the other side of that and I recognize how painful that was for you.
  2. I’m sorry Mom; for thinking that you don’t know anything. I have now been on the other side of that and I recognize how painful that was for you.
  3. I’m sorry Mom; for not letting you know I was okay at 2AM. I have now been on the other side of that and I recognize how painful that was for you.
  4. I’m sorry Mom; for not letting you help me when you clearly could have. I have now been on the other side of that and I recognize how painful that was for you.
  5. I’m sorry Mom; for shutting you out when I was in struggling. I have now been on the other side of that and I recognize how painful that was for you.
  6. I’m sorry Mom; for thinking missing Thanksgiving dinner was no big deal. I have now been on the other side of that and I recognize how painful that was for you.
  7. I’m sorry Mom; for not giving you the respect you deserved. I have now been on the other side of that and I recognize how painful that was for you.
  8. I’m sorry Mom; for forgetting that you are human too. I have now been on the other side of that and I recognize how painful that was for you.

I would hope that you can find it in your heart to forgive me but I don’t have to hope. I know that you have and that you will because you are you. You are my Mom and no matter how far away I go, I know that I can always come back.

This is the legacy you leave because I now extend the same to my children. I now know the pain of being a Mom but, thanks to you, I also know the joy.
